The History of Wright’s Sound Gallery – Where did we get our name?
Although we tout “since 1973″, our story goes much further back to 1936 when Shreveport businessman, Harold Wright opened the New Enamel paint store in downtown Shreveport on Milam St. Harold led a successful career, and eventually morphed his store into a furniture & appliance retail shop. He changed its name to “Wright’s”, and over the years added several more storefronts. During the 1960s, Harold partnered with two other local furniture & appliance operations, Watley’s in Shreveport, and Will’s in Bossier City. Watley’s, Will’s & Wright’s, or the “W” stores, successfully blanketed the Shreveport-Bossier area. During this time, local businessman Bill McGuire opened Shreveport Refrigeration, which was another local chain of stores that sold appliances, furniture, TVs, and home stereo.
In 1972, Harold Wright retired, and sold out the Wright’s storefronts to their respective managers. In 1973, Harold and businessman Jack Comegys backed Tom Bartle into business, and opened a Wright’s across from the Shreve City Shopping Center. This particular store was the only Wright’s to also carry home audio & TVs. Furniture was quickly phased out of this store, as the home audio market boomed. In the late 1970s, a Wright’s store in the Eastgate shopping center was failing. Harold, who had never closed a store, convinced Bartle to buy it. However, the storefront was incredibly small, only 1500 sq ft, and not big enough to showcase all of the Wright’s appliance products. Modeling it after a CMC store in Dallas’ Northpark Mall, Bartle reopened this store selling only TVs, home & car audio. This store was rebranded and called, Wright’s Sound Gallery.
In the early 1980s, Bartle opened a 10000 sq foot third location across from South Park Mall, but by the mid 1980s, the economy had taken its toll on our area. Bartle’s three stores were all that remained of the Watley, Will’s & Wright’s empire. The Eastgate location was closed, as Bartle refocused the two stores to sell only TV, home & car electronics. Both stores were now known as Wright’s Sound Gallery. Bill McGuire followed suit, dropping the Shreveport Refrigeration name for SR Superstore. He also closed a failing SR store located in the middle of a cotton field at 7600 Youree Dr (this becomes important later). Both Wright’s & SR successfully defended their local markets, as Shreveport saw its first ever big box electronics retailer, Highland Superstore come and go. New Orleans’ electronics chain Campo bought the two remaining SR Superstores in the early 1990s.
In November 1993, Bartle closed both Wright’s locations, and remodeled the old SR store in the middle of the cotton field on Youree Dr. into a state of the art electronics retail storefront. Youree Drive’s cottonfield exploded overnight, and is still the most thriving retail district in Shreveport. During the 1990s, the two Campo stores closed, two Rex stores took there place, but closed soon after, finally Circuit City and Best Buy moved into town. By the mid 1990s, Wright’s found its niche in the market by developing the custom home audio & car audio installation markets. We developed and refined these markets, eventually adding car navigation, car entertainment products, and developed the home theater & home automation market in Shreveport Bossier City. In an effort to keep pricing competitive with big box retailers, and to further our education in these developing markets, Wright’s became a charter member of the HTSA national buying group in 1995, MERA in 1999, and the InCarExperts group in 2009.
Today we provide custom installation of home theater, flat panel HDTV, and home automation in homes and businesses all across North Louisiana and East Texas. We operate the largest car audio installation facility in the Ark-La-Tex, and cater to cars, trucks, boats, & RVs. Our Youree Drive location demonstrates the latest in home theater in three dedicated theater rooms, and the latest in 3D HDTV with numerous flat panel sets from 19″ to 70″. We show the newest car audio & video products, including a full size mock up “car” for customers to play with the latest car navigation products. We also showcase cutting edge home automation in our home technology center. Our retail facility lets customers see, touch, and operate all of the latest in consumer electronics firsthand, rather than reading about it in a book.
Meanwhile, Harold Wright is doing fantastic! He recently moved into a retirement home at the age of 103. He will celebrate his 104th this June, and up until a couple of years ago still enjoyed traveling on cruises, playing tennis, and eating at Ernest’s. Its been a couple of years since he hit a tennis racket, but he was in the store March 2011, and gave me a firmer handshake than most of our salesmen! If we all had a fraction of the energy & life the Lord blessed in Harold, this world would be a much better place.
